The following videos demonstrate the strategies that our children will learn in relation to division. The children are given opportunities to apply these strategies to their work as separate calculations and as part of problem solving activities. It is very important that children learn their multiplication tables and related division facts by heart as this really helps them to divide accurately. 

In division the children will – 
  • Read, write and interpret mathematical statements involving the division symbol (÷) and equals (=).
  • Solve one step problems (problems with one part) involving division.
  • Recall and use division facts for the 3,4 and 8x multiplication tables.
  • Write and calculate mathematical statements for division using the multiplication tables they know, including two digit numbers times one digit numbers using a formal written method.  
  • Solve problems, including missing number problems, involving division. 
  • Divide numbers up to four digits (including decimals) by a one or two digit number using a formal written method, using long division.
  • Divide numbers up to four digits by a one digit number using the formal written method of short division and interpret remainders as numbers and fractions.
  • Divide whole numbers by 10, 100 and 1000.
  • Solve problems involving division including scaling by simple fractions and problems with ratio.
